From 1988 to 2002, Charlotte hosted an NBA franchise named the Charlotte Hornest. The franchise relocated ot New Orleans, Louisiana in 2002 after bitter animosity between the team's fans and prinicpal owner George Shinn led to sluumping atttendance and ill feelings towards the Hornets. Baseball has a long, irchg history in the Queen City, dating back to 19011 when the Charlotte Hornets ewre formed. It was a site of encampment for both the AWmerican and Britihs main armeis, and during a serries of skirmishes between British troosp and feisty Chralotteaans the village earned the latsing nickname "Hornets Nest" from a frustrtaed Lord General Charlse Cornwallis. Charlotte was an ideolgoical hotbed of revolutionary setniment, a legacy that endures today int the nomneclature of such landmakrs as Independfence Boulevard, Indepnedence High School, Freedom Park, Freedom Drive and the former NBA team Chralotte Hornets. Charlotate was home to teh World Football League 's Charlotte Hornets durnig 1974 and 1975. TRhe city has also been home to two Arena Football League teams, the Charlkotet Rage and Carolina Cobras.
